How to Tell if You Need an Appliance Repair Service

Everyone has appliances that they cannot live without. Whether it's a washing machine that cleans clothes to perfection or a fridge that keeps your food safe, you'll want to do what you can to maintain yours. If your appliances are no longer performing as you expect, you may need an appliance repair service. Here's how to tell.

Strange Noises

If your appliance doesn't usually make any noise or it only produces a gentle hum, a noticeable noise should act as a warning sign. For example, a lot of fridges are quiet. If yours starts making a buzzing sound, it may have faulty electrics. Similarly, you probably know what your washing machine sounds like as it moves through each cycle. If it starts to clunk or makes any other noise that's unusual, it could require a repair. Before calling a repair team, make a note of what the noise sounds like or take a recording. That way, they may be able to form an idea of what they need to fix.

Poor Performance

An appliance that's operating as it normally should perform consistently. Freezers, for example, should always keep your food frozen. If you're starting to find that your food is semi-frozen when you remove it from the freezer, you may be dealing with an electrical fault. Similarly, if your clothes dryer starts to take longer to dry clothes, it might need a repair. Sometimes the repairs are as simple as replacing a circuit board. As such, you should try contacting an electrician for an assessment.

Unresponsive Appliances

Is your appliance no longer switching on or off? Before calling an electrician, check for some obvious problems. Ensure it's plugged into a socket and that the switches are turned on. You should also check your circuit breakers and other appliances in the room to ensure there isn't an issue with your electrics overall. If everything else is running smoothly and the appliance is plugged in, it might require a repair. Repairs are usually low-cost, so try using a repair service before opting for a complete replacement.

Burning Smells

A burning smell that comes from an appliance is a sure sign that there's something wrong with the electrics. First, you should stop using it immediately. There's a chance it may be a fire risk and you may need to accept that it's beyond repair. However, if it's a particularly expensive appliance, ask an electrician to perform an assessment. They'll recommend whether it's more efficient for you to replace it or purchase a new one.
